Timeline of Events 

To get a better understanding of the current and widespread drinking water advisory situation in Indigenous communities, we must understand Canada’s colonial history. By looking at the laws, treaties, and regulations, we can see how these issues are systemic.

European colonizers created laws that impact Indigenous communities today, whether it be a result of the legacy of residential schools or the unclear legal language in treaties between indigenous groups and the crown.

 

The contemporary government has tried to address these issues but faces significant challenges when dealing with infrastructure, gaining the trust of Indigenous communities and ensuring that they have a significant input into their governance. Here is a look into that complicated history.
